The Junior Choir at St Mary's Church, Maulden, Bedfordshire

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth - Psalm 96.1

What is Jubilate?

Jubilate is the Junior Choir at St. Mary’s Church in Maulden, Bedfordshire. The name “Jubilate” comes from a Latin word which means “to shout for joy!”

Who can join?

Anybody at Lower or Middle School from Year One upwards, boys and girls, can join. The choir is open to everybody who enjoys singing. You do not even need to know anything about music before you start. If you are not sure whether you will enjoy yourself, then come along, bring your friends and try it for a few weeks. At least have a go!

When is it and where do I go?

Jubilate meets in church from 5.15pm to 6pm on Monday evenings during term time.

What will we do each week?

You will join with others in music and singing games which will help you learn about music and how to sing well. You will then be able to use your skills to learn new songs and hymns. Singing in a choir is a great way of increasing your musical ability whilst having fun. If you also play a musical instrument then your singing will help you with that, too.

What are the coloured ribbons?

The ribbons are part of the Royal School of Church Music’s training scheme called ”Voice for Life”. The white ribbon is to show that you have become a full member of the choir. Then there are four different levels to achieve, starting with Light Blue for all beginners, followed by Dark Blue, Red and finally Yellow for the most advanced singers. Each level helps you to sing well and understand music and encourages you to be a helpful and responsible member of the choir team.

Will I have to come to church on Sundays, too?

Not every week but there will be a small number of Sunday services and special events throughout the year when you will be asked to sing. You will always be told about these dates well in advance so there should not be any problems.

What will I have to wear?

On a Monday evening you may come in your own tidy, casual clothes or school uniform. Our uniform for performances will be a special Jubilate sweatshirt (which will be provided for you) plus black trousers and black shoes. You will also wear your coloured badges on your sweatshirt.

What do I do now?

Just contact us with your name, age, address and contact details and we will contact you. Then come along to our next meeting.

At Jubilate you will be able to:

  • earn these coloured ribbons

  • discover what your voice can do

  • improve your knowledge and understanding of music

  • be a good team member
