Books of the Bible Quiz

Answers in red

In this single (rather long) paragraph, twenty six books of the Bible are hidden. Can you find them? This is a most remarkable puzzle; it was found by a gentleman in an aeroplane seat pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him pleasantly occupied for hours. He enjoys it so much, he passes it on to a friend. She, in turn, judges the job of solving the puzzle so involved that she brews a cup of tea to help her concentration. Some names there are really easy to spot. That’s a fact. Some people, however, will find themselves in a jam, especially since the names are not necessarily capitalised. Truthfully, from answers we have seen, we must admit it usually takes a priest or a biblical scholar to see them, at the worst! Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulties we have in finding the books in this paragraph. During a recent fund-raising event, in which this puzzle featured, the Adelphi lemonade stall set a new sales record. The local paper, the Chronicle, surveyed over two hundred readers, who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As one put it, “The books are all here in plain view, but hidden from sight. Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who need to be shown.”  One revelation that might help is that even my children Timothy and Samuel succeeded, although large numbers failed. Also keep in mind that punctuation symbols and spaces in the middle are quite normal. A chipper attitude is needed, to help you compete really well against those who think they know all the answers. So don’t give up – there is no need for any mass exodus! There really are 26 books of the Bible, lurking somewhere in this paragraph, waiting to be found.
